A Historical Third Space Ushers in the Seasonal Sun

The open air meeting place in Tours

Each May, the opening of La Guinguette along the Loire River in Tours brings people down along its banks. And soon after that, warmer temperatures.

There are many guinguettes dotting the banks along the Loire River. They're open air everything: dance halls, restaurants, watering holes. A third space for the community.

Guinguettes have been around since the 1600s, starting in Paris, and have made a comeback in modern times. Here in Tours, the season ends in late September each year as Fall temperatures return. And the guinguette goes into hibernation until the next season's return.

For a couple of weeks in May, I was able to enjoy the opening of the Spring there. Hopefully I can come back again and enjoy another.
