Privacy Policy

Last updated: October 5, 2026

French Crawl is a personal publication about learning French, France, language, culture, and the various things I encounter along the way.

I try to keep the amount of information collected by the site to what is reasonably necessary to run it, communicate with readers, understand how the site is used, and keep the site secure.

This Privacy Policy explains what information French Crawl may collect, how it is used, and what happens when you interact with the site.

Information French Crawl collects

Depending on how you use the site, French Crawl may receive:

  • Newsletter information: your name and email address when you subscribe to the French Crawl Newsletter.
  • Comment information: the comment you submit, your name, email address, and, if you choose to provide one, your website address.
  • Technical information: information generated when you visit the site, such as your IP address, browser or device information, timestamps, pages requested, and other technical information used to operate, understand, and protect the website.

French Crawl does not ask visitors to create user accounts, and there is no separate contact form on the site.

Newsletter

French Crawl uses Kit to manage and deliver its email newsletter.

When you subscribe to the newsletter, you provide your name and email address. This information is sent to Kit so that your subscription can be managed and newsletters can be delivered to you.

The newsletter signup form says that French Crawl will not send spam, and you can unsubscribe at any time using the unsubscribe option included in newsletter emails.

French Crawl does not sell or rent newsletter subscriber information.

Kit may process subscriber information as necessary to provide its email marketing services. Its handling of that information is also subject to Kit’s own privacy practices.

Comments

Comments are enabled on some French Crawl posts.

When you leave a comment, WordPress receives and stores the information you submit, including:

  • your comment;
  • your name;
  • your email address; and
  • your website address, if you provide one.

Your email address is not publicly displayed with your comment. Your name and comment may be publicly displayed if the comment is approved and published. Your website address may also be associated with or displayed alongside your comment depending on how WordPress handles the information you provide.

The comment form includes an optional checkbox allowing you to save your name, email address, and website in your browser for the next time you comment. If you select that option, WordPress uses a browser cookie to remember those details.

WordPress and the site’s security tools may also process technical information associated with comments to help prevent spam, abuse, or unauthorized activity.

Google Analytics

French Crawl uses Google Analytics 4 to understand how visitors use the site.

Google Analytics may collect information about visits and interactions with the site. French Crawl has Enhanced Measurement enabled, which can automatically measure certain interactions, such as page views, scrolling, outbound link clicks, site searches, video interactions, and file downloads, where applicable.

Google Analytics is used for general site analytics and to help understand which content is being read and how the site is being used. Logged-in WordPress users are excluded from Google Analytics.

Google processes information collected through Analytics according to its own privacy practices.

Security and activity logs

French Crawl uses SiteGround Security Optimizer to help protect the website from malicious activity, unauthorized access, brute-force attempts, and other security threats.

The site’s security activity log may record information such as:

  • IP address;
  • date and time;
  • visitor type;
  • pages requested or visited;
  • login attempts; and
  • other information associated with website activity.

This information is used for website security, not to create a personal profile of visitors.

The Security Optimizer activity log is currently configured to retain activity information for up to 12 days.

Hosting and technical information

French Crawl is a WordPress website hosted through SiteGround.

Like most websites, the site necessarily processes certain technical information when someone visits it. This can include IP addresses, browser and device information, timestamps, requested pages, server information, and security logs.

This information may be processed as necessary to operate, maintain, troubleshoot, and secure the website.

Embedded content from other websites

Some French Crawl pages contain embedded content from third-party services, including:

  • YouTube
  • Instagram
  • X (formerly Twitter)
  • GIPHY

These are actual embedded pieces of content rather than simple links.

When a page containing an embedded item is loaded or the embedded content is viewed, the relevant third-party service may communicate directly with your browser and may receive information such as your IP address, browser or device information, cookies, or information about your interaction with the embedded content.

French Crawl does not control the information collected by these third-party services through their embedded content. Their handling of information is governed by their own privacy policies and terms.

How information is used

Information processed through French Crawl is used for purposes such as:

  • operating and maintaining the website;
  • sending the French Crawl newsletter to people who subscribe;
  • managing and displaying comments;
  • understanding how visitors use the site;
  • improving the site’s content and functionality; and
  • detecting, preventing, and responding to security threats, spam, abuse, or unauthorized access.

French Crawl does not sell or rent your personal information.

Cookies and similar technologies

French Crawl and the services used to operate the site may use cookies or similar technologies for purposes such as remembering information you choose to save in your browser, measuring website usage, and providing or securing website functionality.

For example, WordPress can use a cookie when a commenter chooses to save their name, email address, and website for a future comment. Google Analytics may also use cookies and similar technologies as part of its analytics functionality.

Third-party embedded content may also use cookies or similar technologies according to the practices of the service providing that content.

Third-party services

French Crawl uses third-party services to help operate the site and provide certain features. These include:

  • SiteGround for hosting and website infrastructure;
  • Kit for newsletter subscriptions and delivery;
  • Google Analytics for website analytics; and
  • third-party services such as YouTube, Instagram, X, and GIPHY when their content is embedded in a page.

Those services may process information according to their own privacy policies.

Changes to this Privacy Policy

I may update this Privacy Policy from time to time if the site, its features, or the services it uses change.

When I make a significant change, I will update the date at the top of this page.
